VIR is SOF's answer to the intermediate caliber problem: midrange lethality and precision without giving up compact handling, suppressor performance, or reliability. Built around 6 ARC from the ground up - not a caliber swap - it bridges CQB and reconnaissance in a single configuration.

VIR runs the latest Magpul 6 ARC magazine while staying fully compatible with Magpul 6.8 SPC magazines, giving immediate logistical flexibility without compromising feed geometry.

Paired with SOF's 6RX suppressor, the rifle changes character. Shortened, it stays compact and controllable for close quarters work in confined spaces. Extended, it becomes a legitimate midrange reconnaissance platform, accurate and repeatable out to 600 meters. Same rifle, broader envelope.

Reliability is anchored by a dedicated barrel extension built for the pressure curve and case geometry of 6 ARC, improving extraction consistency, bolt stability, and durability under sustained fire. VIR still takes MILSPEC bolts - serviceability and redundancy without a closed ecosystem.

Ballistically, 6 ARC outclasses other military-adjacent intermediate cartridges in this role: flatter trajectories, better energy retention at distance, controllable recoil, efficient suppression. Past typical carbine distances it beats legacy 5.56 systems with less compromise than larger-frame platforms.
